Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the properties of light-curing pulp capping materials, such as calcium and phosphorous ion release, pH change, solubility and microleakage. Three light-curing pulp capping materials (Ultrablend, Lime-lite, Ionosit) and calcium hydroxide based material (Dycal, control) were investigated. Disc-typed specimens were immersed in 5 §¢ deionized water and pH of solution was measured immediately at the end of mixing and subsequently were performed up to 21 day. Forty-two freshly extracted caries-free molars were selected, and then MO/DO Class ¥± cavities were prepared. Cavities were restored with composite resin (Z100) and light-cured. Specimens were thermocycled and then placed in a 2 % methylene blue dye solution for 24 hrs. Specimens were sectioned longitudinally and evaluated for microleakage at the gingival margin using a stereomicro- scope. Lime-lite and Ionosit leached the very small amount of calcium ions (2-5 ppm). Ultrablend (70-90 ppm) leached the greatest calcium ions among the experimental groups. Very small amount of phosphorous ions were leached from Ultrablend and Lime-lite. Ultrablend showed pH 7.0-10.0 at early stage, then decreased slowly to pH 8. Lime-lite almost kept neutrality throughout the testing period. Ionosit showed pH 4.5-5.5 at early stage, then increased slowly to pH 5.5-6.5. The solubility of Dycal was very high, but experimental groups showed very low solubility (2-3 % in Ultrablend). Almost all the specimens showed a microleakage.
